Dr. Susan Fox appointed new Division Director of Neurology

We are pleased to share with you the news that Dr. Susan Fox has been appointed as the new Division Director of Neurology for the Department of Medicine at University Health Network and Sinai Health System, effective August 1, 2019.

In this role, Dr. Fox will be supported by the Krembil Family Chair in Neurology, established in 1997 by the Krembil family, to help facilitate the priority directions of basic and clinical research in the Division of Neurology.

Dr. Fox BM, ChB, MRCP(UK), PhD, has been a Neurologist at UHN since 2003, is Associate Director of the Movement Disorders Clinic, Toronto Western Hospital, and Professor of Neurology, University of Toronto. She did her medical and neurological training in the UK and received her PhD from University of Manchester, UK.

Dr. Fox has held various leadership roles including secretary of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) (2017-19); chair-elect of the Pan-American section of the MDS (2019-21); chair of the MDS evidence based medicine committee (2013-18); and Fellowship Director for the University of Toronto, Division of Neurology (2004-13). She has served on many grant review committees, journal editorial boards and advisory boards, and has been chair of the medical advisory committee for Parkinson Canada since 2015.

Dr. Fox has over 20 years’ experience in preclinical models of Parkinson’s disease and translational studies of novel pharmacological therapies for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders such as dystonia. She has published over 160 peer-reviewed papers, reviews and book chapters in the field and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences.

Drs. Edward Cole, Physician in Chief, UHN, Gelareh Zadeh, Medical Director, Krembil Brain Institute, UHN and Chaim Bell, Physician in Chief, Sinai Health System, made the announcement, noting that they look forward to working with Dr. Fox and are confident that the Division will continue to thrive under her leadership. They also thanked Dr. Vera Bril for her outstanding leadership of the Division of Neurology over the last 12.5 years, saying that she has been an excellent advocate for neurology, has led the extensive financial operations of the Department, and has provided sage council as part of the Departmental executive.
