FIRST UHN is the first hospital in Canada to appoint a Chief AI Scientist
35,000 operations are performed annually at Sprott Department of Surgery
In the operating room, even the most experienced surgeon can face challenges.
Surgeon Dr. Amin Madani leads a group of scientists at UHN’s Surgical AI Research Academy who are working to change that. Fueled by your support, the team is using AI technology to create surgical techniques that lead to better outcomes and get patients home sooner.
One UHN-created program uses a colour-coded system to give surgeons a more precise field of vision than even the best human eye can see.
A computer is trained to interpret patient images in real time during surgeries. The images are scanned and projected live in onto video monitors. Green or red zones show safe and risky areas of the patient’s body as surgeons are operating, significantly reducing the chance of error. This program is already being used in gallbladder and colorectal cancer surgeries.

Your support makes every critical moment in the operating room safer for patients.
Dr. Madani is sharing his valuable advancements with surgeons worldwide, inspiring other top hospitals to join UHN on our mission to change the status quo of medicine.
AI innovation joins UHN’s long track record of surgical firsts, all made possible through donor support.
Together, we’re redefining the future of surgical care around the world.
