UHN’s Toronto Western Hospital (TWH) was recently ranked among the top global health care institutions in the world and named the tenth best hospital in Canada according to Newsweek’s international hospital rankings. This is TWH’s second time in the top 10, and it has been listed in Canada’s top 15 hospitals consistently since Newsweek began its rankings in 2019.
TWH is at the heart of a bustling, multicultural community, providing vital support through its emergency department, surgery and critical care programs amongst others. As a hub for the unique integration of patient care, education and research, TWH is home to world-leading institutes like the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, Krembil Brain Institute and Donald K. Johnson Eye Institute and the future location of the Myrna Daniels Seniors Medicine Centre. The TWH team cares for patients who travel from across the city, province and the country for highly specialized care that is often not available anywhere else.
Alongside the everyday care patients receive, TWH is where breakthroughs happen. Among their recent accomplishments, TeamUHN performed a first-in-Canada robotic knee surgery, resulting in faster surgeries with quicker recovery times and better outcomes for patients. Researchers have uncovered new ways to improve sight for people living with a type of vision loss, and a breakthrough new classification method for Parkinson’s disease that could lead to more targeted treatments. The team at TWH is transforming care across Canada and around the world.
Donor support has been integral to TWH’s path to #10 in Canada and will continue to play an essential role as TWH embarks on a new journey to deliver the future of healthcare. Thanks to an incredible investment by the Government of Ontario, TWH will also be home to a new patient and surgical tower, which is expected to open in 2028. In partnership with the Government of Ontario, UHN Foundation will be raising critical funds to help see the project through to completion. UHNITED to transform surgical care, TeamUHN will have this new space to harness the power of artificial intelligence, state-of-the-art equipment, cutting-edge robotics and advanced imaging technologies, enhancing the more than 23,000 surgeries performed at TWH every year. The new tower will make it possible for the team to significantly increase the number of surgeries performed and set a new standard of care for patients and their families.
“UHN’s Toronto Western Hospital has a remarkable legacy of care, discovery and pioneering research, serving the City of Toronto and Province for more than a century,” says Dr. Kevin Smith, UHN’s President and CEO. “It is gratifying to see this being recognized as among the best in the country. We are honoured to receive this recognition, which is a reflection of how all of our staff, physicians, researchers, educators, learners, philanthropists, board members and volunteers work as one team in the service of building a healthier world.”
“The dedication and generosity of our community of donors makes achievements like this possible,” says Julie Quenneville, CEO of UHN Foundation. “We are so honoured to share this recognition with UHN and our wonderful community of supporters. Thinking about the incredible work already being done at TWH and what the new tower will bring, it is exciting to imagine the exceptional things that we can achieve when this space and the team are brought together.”
No one ever changed the world on their own but when the bright minds at UHN work together with donors we can redefine the world of health care together.
