Krembil Brain Institute: using their brains to save yours

Together with UHN, we are excited to announce the official formation of the Krembil Brain Institute. The Institute brings together clinicians from the Krembil Neuroscience Centre and scientists from the Krembil Research Institute to seek better treatments and cures for diseases and disorders of the brain and spine.

This joining of forces will make the Krembil Brain Institute the largest and most comprehensive team of its kind in Canada, and among the best in the world. Under the leadership of Program Medical Director Dr. Gelareh Zadeh and Research Institute Director Dr. Donald Weaver, our world-leading clinicians and researchers will combine their brain power to translate discoveries into patient care at an accelerated pace.

“Aligning the clinical and research priorities at Krembil is crucial to making a bigger impact in our field and the community we serve, and for improving outcomes and wellness of the aging brain,” says Dr. Zadeh.

An estimated one in three Canadians will be affected by a brain disease, disorder or injury in their lifetime. Millions are affected worldwide.

“In this coming century, the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases will emerge as one of the pre-eminent pursuits of modern medicine,” says Dr. Weaver.

The Krembil Brain Institute will offer integrated, multidisciplinary, comprehensive neuroscience health care that is second to none in Canada and among the best in the world. Through state-of-the-art patient care and advanced research, the Krembil Brain Institute will work relentlessly to make tomorrow’s solutions to brain problems a reality today.

“We have the expertise, the people power and the ambition to take neurosciences to the next phase, which is to understand where we can make the biggest impact on outcomes,” says Dr. Zadeh.

“The establishment of the Krembil Brain Institute positions us to be a predominant leader in brain medicine now, and in the years to come,” adds Dr. Weaver.
