UHN, Canada’s No. 1 hospital system, has been ranked third in the world for the second year in a row by Newsweek magazine.
UHN’s Toronto General Hospital (TGH) is behind only Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, both in the United States, making it the top publicly funded hospital in the world. Further, TGH is the only Canadian hospital in the rankings to crack the top 10, as it has for seven years in a row.
UHN’s Toronto Western Hospital is among the top 10 in Canada for a second straight year.
“These are all amazing achievements, which together firmly establish UHN’s national and international leadership as Canada’s No. 1 hospital, and highlight our influential role as a global leader in health care, in education and in research,” says Dr. Kevin Smith, UHN’s President & CEO.
“Our place as the top publicly funded hospital in the world is a resounding testament to the fact that the Canadian way of doing things really works.”
UHN’s Sprott Department of Surgery, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Ajmera Transplant Centre are among the world-leading programs calling TGH home. However, sustaining a world class academic health sciences centre requires the contribution of every program and service, including the Emergency Department, General Internal Medicine, the Joint Department of Medical Imaging, the Laboratory Medicine Program, rehabilitation, research institutes and the Michener Institute of Education at UHN.
“What fills me with the greatest pride is knowing that none of these accolades would be possible without our incredible people, TeamUHN,” Dr. Smith says. “Their unwavering dedication to patients and families, to research and discovery, and to education and learning, makes them UHN’s most precious resource.
“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of our staff, physicians, researchers, learners and volunteers for your service, your passion for what you do, your relentless commitment to excellence, and, of course, your very hard work. You have all contributed to making UHN a truly world class institution.”
Dr. Smith also paid tribute to “the tremendous support” of UHN’s donors and funders, including the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada, as well as the University of Toronto.
“Together, we are fulfilling our mission of building A Healthier World,” he says.
The Newsweek rankings, released on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025, are developed and finalized by a global panel of doctors, medical professionals and administrators.
