Whatever it takes

Whether it’s developed at birth or later in life, a result of lifestyle or genetics, detectable early or late, the fact remains: heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide.

For more than 25 years, the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre team has cared for patients with the most complex cases of heart and vascular disease, all while conducting critical research to improve patient outcomes.

To celebrate the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre’s 25th anniversary, we’re sharing an in-depth look into some of the groundbreaking innovation and patient stories that take place here every day. Visit DoWhateverItTakes.ca or click the button below to learn more.

25 years of accomplishments at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre

Our history is layered with moments where we’ve built what doesn’t exist, done what nobody has tried, and brought hope when all seemed lost.

In other words: we’ll do whatever it takes for our patients.

This is the mission that binds the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre team together – from surgeons to scientists, nurses to lab technicians, fellows to medical students. Because we know that when you or your loved one is faced with such a life-altering, life-threatening disease, you want a team who will do whatever it takes to get you through it.

However, there remains a perpetual challenge: heart and vascular disease is being treated using a one-size-fits-all approach, and yet every scenario is different. This isn’t good enough for our patients. We’re harnessing the power of data to develop a new model of care – one that takes into account a patient’s unique physiology, including their age, sex, ethnicity and genetics – to customize treatment and improve outcomes.

We need donor support to do whatever it takes to shape the future of cardiovascular care.

Fundraising priorities

Our team is leading innovative research that will enable us to perform procedures, devise drug therapies and use devices that have the greatest chance of success. By asking the right questions, prioritizing collaboration, harnessing the power of the Peter Munk Digital Cardiovascular Health Platform – the top data integration network in Canada – and integrating artificial intelligence in decision-making, this research will help ensure every patient is treated at the right time and in the right way.

Research areas include:

• Predicting patients at risk of an aortic aneurysm
• Protecting the hearts of patients with cancer
• Preventing strokes
• Improving life expectancy after cardiogenic shock
• Regenerating heart cells after a heart attack
• Increasing the number of hearts available for transplant
• Identifying the genes responsible for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Our cardiologists, surgeons, medical imaging experts, artificial intelligence leads and scientists are challenging convention and asking the questions that will shape the future of cardiovascular care.

To continue to do whatever it takes for our patients, we must recruit and retain world-renowned talent with the knowledge, confidence and drive to tackle the most complex cases of heart and vascular disease.

The Peter Munk Cardiac Centre Academy aims to be the principal location for those seeking to learn the most advanced methods of care for heart and vascular disease. The Academy is designed to provide comprehensive, cutting-edge and multidisciplinary training with renowned leaders in the field, and highly coveted fellowships that give trainees access to subspecialties that don’t exist elsewhere.

From becoming the first healthcare program to partner with the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence to the first program in Canada to use state-of-the-art imaging equipment with the lowest rates of radiation, we know technology has the power to change the care we provide. We’re leading the innovation and evolution of minimally invasive procedures, robotics and devices unavailable at other centres to improve outcomes for the most complex cases of heart and vascular disease.
