As the largest surgical program in Canada, the Sprott Department of Surgery at UHN offers varied surgical services that cross an extraordinary spectrum of programs. Surgeons work together with a multidisciplinary team to offer the best care and results for patients, saving countless lives.

The Department spans 13 surgical divisions, from cardiovascular to neurosurgery to thoracic, across UHN hospitals. These include:

  • General
  • Vascular
  • Cardiac
  • Thoracic
  • Otolaryngology/head and neck
  • Orthopedic
  • Transplant
  • Gynecology oncology
  • Surgical oncology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Urology
  • Plastic

More surgeries are performed at the Sprott Department of Surgery than anywhere else in Canada, with more than 35,000 annually, including more than 375 robotic procedures. More than 140 surgeons have advanced training in their specialties and perform some of the most technically difficult surgeries worldwide. In fact, many of the patients that come to UHN for surgery have been transferred from other hospitals because of their complexity – making us the place that patients often turn to when nobody else can help.

With a reputation for pioneering leading-edge technologies and surgical techniques, Sprott Surgery serves as the testing ground for the latest innovations. Established surgeons and surgical trainees from around the globe visit Sprott Surgery’s operating rooms to learn more about the way they care for their patients. Knowledge is also shared with the next generation of surgeons and hospitals worldwide, including those in developing countries, using the most advanced communication and telesimulation tools.

We need donor support to continue to revolutionize surgery – inventing and perfecting surgical techniques that will save countless lives here and around the globe.

OR Redevelopment at Toronto Western Hospital

While the Sprott Department of Surgery at Toronto Western Hospital is home to surgical teams that provide world-class care, the operating facilities are decades old. To meet the needs of our patients, a new operating facility is now being developed that parallels the Department’s level of expertise, accommodates what is needed today, and takes us well into the future.
