Know your heroes: Trudy Whiting

Name: Trudy Whiting
Title: Registered Nurse
Number of years working in health care: 25
I was born and raised in: St. Andrew, Jamaica

I became a nurse because I wanted to help others live better lives by providing the best possible care and support (sometimes during the worst time of their lives), and because of the many opportunities for continued learning and professional development.

My roles here at UHN includes providing direct patient care, serving as a Charge Nurse to direct patient flow, acting as a Preceptor (an experienced nurse who provides guidance) to support new staff and nursing students and working as a Wound Resource Nurse to collaborate with others in preventing and managing early onset of pressure injuries.

The thing I love the most about my job is the team support and the respect we have for each other, knowing the many challenges that comes with being a nurse.

The most incredible thing I’ve seen at work was during the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the courage and bravery by the health care teams during one of the most challenging times. Working long hours to understand and manage this new virus.

I’m inspired by Dr. Suneil Kalia, a neurosurgeon here at UHN, by his research work, clinical and surgical management of patients with Parkinson’s disease and improving the lives of many with this condition.

My personal heroes are my family because they supported and encouraged me in my nursing.

They understand the challenges and complexities involved in maintaining a balanced family life and my dedication in serving others.

I sometimes worry about the disparities in health care that affects the most vulnerable population, such as barriers to early screening and diagnosis of treatable and preventable disorders.

I’ve found joy recently from a recent visit from a patient. I was grateful to see her remarkable recovery from brain surgery and becoming a mom of two beautiful children. This truly shows the impact of neuroscience research in changing the lives of many.

My favourite book is the bible because it teaches me to love others, to be patient and kind to others, to support others and to be honest.

My ideal day off is watching my favorite series on Netflix.
