The 20th annual Lew Dunn Charity Golf Classic took place on Monday, August 19, raising $104,000 for the R. Lewis Dunn Scholarship in Colorectal and Oncologic Surgery at University Health Network (UHN). Over the 20-year history of the event, more than $4 million has been raised for the Scholarship.

The Lew Dunn Classic has been held yearly in memory of its namesake, past President and CEO of CGU and Aviva Canada. Lew passed away in 1999 after a battle with colon cancer, and to honour his memory, the Dunn family created the Lew Dunn Memorial Foundation to promote colon cancer research and awareness.

The Foundation, supported by family and friends, decided it would be fitting to raise funds for the scholarship through Lew’s passion – golf. Held at The Club at Bond Head, this year’s tournament, was a double-shotgun start allowing for more than 280 participants. A cocktail reception, dinner and silent auction followed.

The Lew Dunn Charity Golf Classic has enabled UHN to train future leaders dedicated to surgical oncology. By recruiting and retaining the best and brightest in the field, the Scholarship has helped drive the future of colorectal cancer treatment, saving countless lives in the process.

After a long and extremely successful run, the Lew Dunn Memorial Foundation has decided that this years’ event would be the last. A permanent plaque commemorating the Dunn family and the event will be mounted in the Giovanni & Anna DeGasperis Lounge at Toronto General Hospital.

Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation is honoured to have been part of such a longstanding and impactful fundraising tradition.
