UHN’s Toronto General Hospital (TGH) has climbed to third among the world’s best hospitals in a global ranking from Newsweek. This is its highest spot on the prestigious annual list and up from #5 last year.
TGH’s ranking behind only Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, both of the United States, makes it the top publicly funded hospital in the world.
Part of UHN, Canada’s #1 hospital, TGH is home to the world-leading Sprott Department of Surgery, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Ajmera Transplant Centre. With the dedication of every program and service, including General Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, the Laboratory Medicine Program, Joint Department of Medical Imaging and Environmental Services, a truly world class academic hospital is sustained.
In the past year, UHN became a founding member of Mayo Clinic’s Platform_Connect and was Canada’s first hospital to appoint a Chief AI Scientist. Newsweek noted “intriguing use of artificial intelligence to advance medical discoveries” as a factor in this year’s ranking and cited a study published last year at Toronto General Hospital Research Institute indicating how artificial intelligence and machine learning can guide physicians on donor lung suitability and transplant outcomes, dramatically increasing the number of successful organ transplants.
TGH is the only hospital in Canada to crack the top 10 in the global rankings by Newsweek, as it has for six consecutive years. This year, UHN’s Toronto Western Hospital joins the list of the top 10 hospitals in Canada for the second time. It appeared on the list in 2021.
“At UHN, we are honoured and appreciative to once again be recognized as an international leader in patient care, research and education,” says Dr. Kevin Smith, UHN’s President & CEO. “It is particularly gratifying to see our universally accessible care model solidify its place among the world’s best hospitals. This recognition is only made possible because of the collective efforts of TeamUHN – the dedicated staff, physicians, researchers, learners, philanthropists, board members and volunteers who everyday are committed to our mission of building a healthier world.”
“It’s thanks to the generous support of our donors that we are celebrating this wonderful achievement,” says Julie Quenneville, CEO of UHN Foundation. “In the spirit of our recent UHNITED campaign, this accomplishment is yet another testament to the power we have to change the status quo of health care when we unite as a community.”
“As Canada’s top research hospital, we are enormously proud of the groundbreaking work done by our scientists and their teams – work that discovers, designs, tests and implements new health care solutions to elevate patient experiences and address unmet patient needs,” says Dr. Brad Wouters, UHN’s Executive Vice President of Science and Research.
