Toronto General Hospital once again number 4 in the world

For the third year in a row, Toronto General Hospital (TGH) has been ranked one of the world’s best hospitals in a global ranking. TGH is ranked number four for the second year and is again the only Canadian hospital in the top 10.

Since TGH first opened in 1819, world firsts have included the first clinical use of insulin, the first successful single- and double-lung transplants, the first transplant using the Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion System, and the first successful direct stimulation of a heart that had stopped beating, the precursor of all pacemakers. TGH is part of University Health Network (UHN), Canada’s largest research and teaching hospital, affiliated with the University of Toronto.

The ranking, managed by a global market research company in partnership with Newsweek magazine, rated more than 1,000 healthcare institutions. The 2021 top 10 list was finalized by a panel of doctors, medical professionals and administrators from across four continents.

“UHN is proud and humbled to be recognized for transforming the lives of patients through world-class care, research and education among this elite group of hospitals,” says Dr. Kevin Smith, UHN President & CEO. “This honour is a testament to the remarkable people of UHN – from the bedside to the Board. Our role as a leading research hospital is made possible thanks to the passionate support of our Foundations, donors and partners across all levels of government, who invest in UHN to build a healthier world.”

Philanthropy has been critical to fuelling the advances in care and discovery that contributed to the ranking.

“As we all know, this has been an exceptional year in health care. We’re so happy for our colleagues at Toronto General Hospital and all of UHN for this tremendous recognition, and are inspired by the work they do every day,” says Tennys Hanson, Chief Executive Officer of Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation and Vice President and Chief Development Officer of UHN. “We’re grateful to our community of donors who are helping to fuel this life-saving work.”
