Recognizing our nurses this Nursing Week

Did you know University Health Network (UHN) is home to more than 3,500 nursing staff, more than 1,180 allied health professions staff, and more than 2,165 nursing and health professions students completing their placements each year?

That means we have a lot to celebrate for National Nursing Week. Part of this celebration includes the 2018 Nursing & Health Professions Staff Scholarships & Awards presented by UHN and Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation. Donors investment in, and dedication to, the nursing and allied health programs at UHN help provide opportunities for front-line staff to engage in dynamic leadership, innovative education and research, and supportive professional development, each of which helps to advance patient-centred care and best practices within our hospitals. Congratulations to this year’s winners!

This week, we take time to recognize and thank our nursing and health professions staff for the exceptional contributions they make to our hospitals. One of the highlights of nursing and health professions at UHN is our professional practice model, putting patients first and providing a foundation for excellence in patient care, research and education.

The theme of this year’s week is #YesThisIsNursing, recognizing the many diverse roles nurses take on every day. Nurses are vital members of every team, with duties spanning primary, acute and long-term care, rehab, outreach programs, international work, and many other areas. Within these areas, nurses are doing a wide range of duties, from being traditional point-of-care providers to policy developers, administrators, researchers, educators, practitioners and consultants. There’s no area of health care that does not see nurses playing a key role.

To every nurse at Toronto General and Toronto Western hospitals, you are essential members of our hospital communities and we thank you for your dedication, ingenuity, creativity and the valuable role you play in ensuring the best in patient care and innovation.
