Toronto General Hospital’s (TGH) Drs. York Pei and Charmaine Lok recently received international awards recognizing their extraordinary contributions to polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and National Kidney Foundation (NKF) initiatives, respectively.

Dr. Pei, Director of the Hereditary Kidney Disease Clinic at TGH, received the Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize for Advancement at the World Congress of Nephrology in Melbourne, Australia. This esteemed award recognizes individuals who have tangibly contributed to the improvement of PKD knowledge and treatment.

Awarded jointly by the PKD Foundation and the International Society of Nephrology, Dr. Pei is the first Canadian recipient since its inception in 2002.

“My journey in PKD research has been most gratifying, but there were challenging times as well when I felt deflated at the prospect of running out of funding,” says Dr. Pei. “Looking back now, I realize, as Winston Churchill once said, ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal– it is the courage to continue that counts.’”

Dr. Lok, Director of the Multi-Care Kidney Clinic at TGH, received the Garabed Eknoyan Award at the National Kidney Foundation 2019 Spring Clinical Meetings in Boston. The award recognizes those who exemplify NKF’s mission to improve patients’ quality of life with their phenomenal contributions to key initiatives.

“Our Division strives to be the leading section in Nephrology globally. Our International impact is exemplified by these prestigious awards given to leaders in their respective fields,” says Dr. Christopher Chan, Medical Director, Division of Nephrology, UHN.

Congratulations to Drs. Pei and Lok on their exceptional achievements and significant contributions to the field of Nephrology.
